Books on the
Art of War
According
to a recent article by The Economist, there are now over fifty
different English language versions of the Art of War. With
such a wide selection, one can afford to be choosy. Different authors
tend to stress different aspects of the book to appeal to certain group.
For example, what a business owner would find valuable, would be different
than what appeals to a manager in the middle of a large organization.
Here is a sample of some of the better books we have found.
This is the classic English version written by
Clavel in 1983. The fact that it keeps getting published says
something about the author's ability to sing to the tune of the
times.
Six Strategic Principles for Managers
by Mark R. McNeilly
Businesses, especially smaller businesses, have
a special challenge not normally faced by their larger brethren.
When you are a small fish in a large pond, you’re fish
bait for the sharks. One can come a big fish, but one must pay
close attention to one’s competitors. For example, one
must be careful how one choose one’s battles.
Too many businesses decide to compete on the basis
of price, rather than other means. While this appeals to a certain
type of customer, it definitely causes competitors to focus their
attention on the new threat of the moment— you. This book
focuses on six principles and provides many examples of how these
principles are applied in todays world of business.
Within organizations, there
is competition. While most organizations strive to emphasize
cooperation and teamwork, rivalries can develop between individuals
in the middle and executive ranks. This competition rarely takes
the form of a life and death struggle that a war between states
entails, but you should make sure that you can protect yourself
from unscrupulous behavior. One of our favorite sayings goes, “Just
because you’re not paranoid, doesn't mean people aren’t
out to get you.”
Some people learn by seeing pictures, so this version
has a large number of drawings and illustrations can help make
the abstract more tangible. If you wish to review the book, it
has over 69 pages one can review on-line.

widely known strategies in the Warring States Period were Sun

a more difficult personal history, having to overcome a dangerous
adversary who almost killed him.
